Old and New Wine… Let Go of the Past

Newness Cannot Be Combined Within Old Forms

Matthew 9: 16-17 – “But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. “Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

In ancient times, goat skins were used to hold wine. As the grape juice fermented, the wine would expand and the new wine skins would stretch.

The process of fermentation causes the wine to expand and it needs a skin that is able to expand and stretch as it grows, so that it is able to hold it and preserve it for the harvest of drinking.

A used skin was already stretched to its capacity. If new wine were put into it before it fermented, it would tear and break open and the wine would spill out and be wasted.

  • We must be willing to stretch beyond conformities.

I think a lot of us at certain points in our lives tend to lean on what we already know and the experiences we’ve already had (old forms). I know I certainly do! The truth is that we don’t know everything and we should never get to the place that we stop learning or think we’ve somehow, “arrived”. Be teachable… Be willing to try new things… Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone… Stretching can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful, but it’s good for you. Embrace the pain of the stretch and allow it to make you grow!

  • There are some things that we must be willing to LET GO of in order to allow God to do new things in us and through us.

  • God spoke to me earlier this year and clearly said,

  • “Your past experiences will not be what sustains you for the new thing that I have for you.”

Don’t get me wrong. I believe God is constantly preparing us for our next season. He NEVER WASTES ANYTHING! He teaches, builds, strengthens and grows us in ALL seasons and experiences. There are things I have learned, through the good and the bad, that I have been strengthened by, and grown from. There have been things I have taken with me to the next season that were tremendously valuable. In those seasons of growing, there were times when I had reached my maximum capacity and it was time to for me let go of my familiar places and trust God

Its scary! I know! That’s why it’s called “trust”! If we hold too tightly to our past, it’s impossible to step into our future.

    • Experience and maturity are valuable, but if we rely solely on that, it will hold us back!

You are on a journey and your experience doesn’t always make you an expert! If you do what you’ve ALWAYS done, you will get what you’ve ALWAYS gotten, which means nothing new. How boring, unproductive and unfortunate?! If you have stretched as far as you think you can, think again! Take on a new way of thinking; a new way of doing things. A fresh and new perspective can produce growth! Better yet, blessing and harvest like you have not yet experienced!

Romans 12:2 – And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

    • Being transformed is a process. It is not an event!

We never “arrive”. No matter how much we have already learned or experienced. His word is an endless supply of life. It is the very thing that the Spirit of God uses to speak truth to our heart. It renews (makes new). It restores, gives instruction and wisdom on practical and spiritual matters.

    • Be open to new dreams, visions, seasons, and maybe even a new way of doing things.

Don’t make God as small as your own ideas, opinions and past experiences. He’s so much bigger than anything we could come up with on our own. God is the creator of all things. His ways are limitless! They are not confined to what we think we already know or experiences we’ve already had! Don’t miss out on the new thing that God has for you because you have your back turned looking at your past!

Isaiah 43:19 – Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert.
